Monumental Ancestral Portrait of a Nobleman. Chinese School. 19th Century.

Descriptio Pigments on rice paper. Dimensions: 161 x 90 cm. A female figure in a frontal position and solemn attitude, dressed in ceremonial attire in shades of red and green, richly decorated with embroidered motifs of auspicious birds and clouds. Her serene and restrained face, framed by an ornate headdress, expresses a hieratic dignity characteristic of traditional Chinese ancestral portraits. The calligraphic inscription on the left and the red seal lend authenticity and a commemorative context to the piece. The symmetrical, frontal representation, combined with the meticulous detail of the costume, reflects the Confucian ideals of filial respect and spiritual continuity. This portrait, conceived as a devotional piece, is part of an aesthetic and ritual practice that flourished in China during the 18th and 19th centuries, combining pictorial mastery and genealogical value.
