Moses Bahelfer Bagel (1908-1995) - La Foule et le porte-voix

The Crowd and the Megaphone - Moshe Bagel - 1980. Moshe Bagel (1908–1995) — Painter and Graphic Artist, Bauhaus and the School of Paris Moshe Bagel, also known as Moshe Bahelfer and Moses Bahelfer, was a painter, graphic artist, illustrator, and set designer, born on June 29, 1908, in Vilnius, now in Lithuania, and died in Paris in 1995. After studying art in Vilnius, he joined the Yung Vilna group, which brought together young artists, writers, and poets working in Yiddish. In 1928, he enrolled at the Bauhaus in Dessau, one of the major schools of modern European art. From 1928 to 1932, he studied graphic arts and advertising, as well as painting under Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, and Lyonel Feininger. He graduated from the Bauhaus with distinction in February 1932. This training had a lasting influence on his artistic approach, particularly his interest in the construction of forms, composition, and abstraction. He settled in Paris in 1933 and pursued a diverse career. He worked as a graphic artist and illustrator for the Nouvelle Revue Française, illustrated children’s books, and produced photographic reports for the VU agency. He also worked in the theater, designing sets and costumes for Yiddish theater. In 1939, he enlisted in the French Foreign Legion. During the Occupation, while living in Toulouse, he took part in the Resistance by making false identity papers. From 1947 to 1968, he headed the advertising department of the film company 20th Century Fox in Paris. In 1959, UNESCO commissioned fifteen large-scale works inspired by the world of Yiddish writer Sholem Aleichem. After they were exhibited at UNESCO headquarters, Bagel donated them to the writer’s foundation in Tel Aviv. In 1968, his works were included in the traveling exhibition 50 Jahre Bauhaus, organized by the Württembergischer Kunstverein in Stuttgart and shown in several cities around the world. Moses Bagel holds a distinctive place in 20th-century modern art, at the crossroads of the Bauhaus, the School of Paris, and graphic arts. His career reflects a varied artistic practice, ranging from illustration and figurative art to geometric and abstract explorations.
