MUSEUM - FIRE OPAL - Mexico 42.80 carats - NO RESERVE...

Here is a truly exceptional piece, aimed at collectors seeking specimens that far exceed the boundaries of a classic Mexican opal. With its remarkable weight of 42.80 carats and its length of 40.8 mm, this specimen impresses as much by its dimensions as by its aesthetics: a vast mass in incandescent red, scarlet, garnet, and fire orange hues, traversed by more translucent areas and dotted with natural fragments of host rock. Its elongated, almost sculptural silhouette, and the finish that allows the material to be observed in depth give it a spectacular presence. Preservation of the relationship between the opal and its matrix adds an essential mineralogical dimension: this is not simply an isolated gem, but a true witness to its geological formation. Through its extraordinary format, chromatic intensity, and highly singular visual character, this piece possesses all the qualities sought in a major collection specimen, worthy of a central place in a specialized collection or a museum display. Characteristics - Stone: Natural Mexican opal - Type: Fire opal in matrix - Origin: Mexico - Exceptional weight: 42.80 carats - Dimensions: 40.8 × 20.2 × 8 mm - Length: Over 4 centimeters - Colors: Incandescent red, scarlet red, garnet, fire orange - Appearance: Translucent in places, with remarkable visual depth - Matrix: Natural fragments visible within the opaline matter - Shape: Freeform, elongated, sculptural - Collecting quality: Major specimen - Interest: High-end collection, gemology, mineralogy, museum display 42.80 carats: spectacular proportions One of the first features of this piece lies in its considerable dimensions. With 40.8 mm in length, it exceeds four centimeters and develops a surface large enough to reveal the full complexity of its structure. Its weight of 42.80 carats, about 8.56 grams, gives it an unusual physical presence for a Mexican fire opal presented in this form. The eye can travel across the piece like a true mineral landscape: the extremely saturated red zones alternate with more translucent areas while clear fragments of matrix seem to float at different depths. A red color of striking intensity The dominant visual feature is undoubtedly this extraordinary red saturation. Under light, the stone seems literally lit from within. Some regions appear scarlet, others take deeper garnet red tones, while the translucent edges allow light to penetrate the specimen. This combination creates a remarkable sense of depth. The color does not simply sit on the surface: it seems to occupy different levels inside the stone. The result is a piece particularly spectacular in photography, but above all designed to be observed from multiple angles and under different lighting conditions. The matrix, a true geological signature The clear inclusions and fragments visible inside constitute an essential part of this piece’s identity. They create a striking contrast with the deep red environment and remind us that the opal developed within a natural rocky environment. Some areas seem almost suspended in the translucent matter, giving the specimen a particularly intricate internal architecture. It is precisely this co-existence of opaline matter, intense color, and matrix vestiges that gives it the appearance of a true mineralogical object rather than a mere ornamental stone. Mexico: an historic and prestigious provenance Mexico is one of the world’s most famous historical sources for fire opal. This tradition goes back long before modern mining. Pre-Columbian peoples of Mexico already knew opal, before Mexican deposits experienced a renewed period of exploitation from the 19th century onward and their stones progressively entered major international collections. Mexican volcanic terrains offered the conditions enabling the formation of opals with these extraordinary warm nuances, ranging from yellow to deep red. It is this chromatic identity that has made Mexican fire opal one of the country’s gemological signatures. Owning a piece that still preserves a significant mineralogical dimension allows one to unite in a single object the gemological history of Mexico and its geological history. A birth at the heart of ancient volcanic terrains The beauty of the piece originates from a natural phenomenon infinitely older. After the volcanic episodes that shaped the terrains hosting these opals, silica-rich solutions circulated through cracks and cavities in the rock. The progressive deposition of this silica allowed the formation of opaline matter inside these spaces. Extremely long processes thus produced this association that can still be observed today between the red opaline matter and its mineral environment. Each matrix fragment therefore forms part of the stone’s geological narrative. A true mineral landscape At this scale, the piece becomes almost a miniature natural painting. The large red surface forms the backdrop of the composition. Lighter matrix elements appear as irregular islets, while transparent or translucent areas create a sense of depth. The free, highly elongated shape further reinforces its unique character: unlike a calibrated stone, it retains an immediately recognizable silhouette that cannot be exactly reproduced on another natural specimen. It is precisely this individuality that makes high-collection pieces so attractive. A centerpiece piece Some stones are sought for their color. Others for their size, provenance, or morphology. This piece combines these elements in a single specimen. Its 42.80 carats, 40.8 mm, exceptionally dominant red color, depth, substantial presence of opaline matter, and preserved matrix fragments give it an immediately recognizable personality. It could form the central piece of a collection dedicated to Mexican opals, but could also join a high-level mineralogical or gemological collection. An extraordinary Mexican opal More than just a fire opal, this 42.80-carat piece is a true object of contemplation: over four centimeters of blazing red matter in which a part of its geological history remains trapped. A spectacular, singular, and imposing piece, combining exceptional dimensions, extremely intense color, natural matrix, and historic Mexican provenance — the kind of specimen that can instantly become one of the emblematic pieces of a collection.
