Naar Maurice Picaud - Relief

This auction features an inverted gold bas-relief, inspired by the iconic façade relief that since 1925 has adorned the entrance of the world-famous Folies Bergère revue theater in Paris. This impressive meter-tall Art Deco sculpture was designed by the renowned French architect and interior designer Maurice Picaud, also known as Pico (1900-1977). Picaud's masterpiece celebrates the essence of the Art Deco movement and captures the lush, exotic atmosphere of Parisian nightlife in the 1920s. The artwork, titled 'Serpentine Dancer', depicts the famous dancer Lila Nikolska in her graceful movements. The abstract swirls and shapes surrounding her amplify the dynamism and energy of her dance, giving this work a timeless allure. The Folies Bergère revue theater, founded in 1869 as a music hall, enjoyed its heyday from the 1890s up to World War II. This iconic theater is still in operation and has a rich history. The piece offered in this auction is a unique item from the 'Inverted Collection' of Atelier Laurier Design. This piece deviates from Maurice Picaud's original Folies Bergère relief because it is not formed in positive but in negative. This means the relief has been hollowed out on the front, resulting in a slight bulge at the back. Furthermore, this inverted interpretation is distinguished by the dancing woman not kicking to the right, as in the original, but to the left. The artwork is in excellent condition and will be carefully packaged for shipment, including insurance against loss or damage in transit. Dimensions: 48 x 50 x 3 cm Material: porcelain plaster with terracotta pigments Weight: 5 kilograms * In a separate Catawiki auction, we also offer a Folies Bergère relief that points in the opposite direction. Bid in both auctions to secure this exceptional and decorative Folies set. The last photo in this auction provides an impression of the complete set on the wall. When purchasing items from both auctions, you pay shipping only once.
