Painted in 1912. Provenance: Arthur Tooth & Sons Ltd., London Exhibited: Paris, Galerie Watteau, Retrospective N. Guilbert, December 1969, no. 7 London, Arthur Tooth and Sons, Narcisse Guilbert 1878-1942, no. 13 Literature: Arthur Tooth and Sons, Narcisse Guilbert 1878-1942, 1970, no. 13, illus. The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by François Lespinasse. Born in Bouville, south of Paris in 1882, the death of Guilbert’s father in 1890 resulted in the family moving to Rouen. It was here with the encouragement of painter Joseph Delattre, founding member of the École de Rouen, that Guilbert enrolled in the École des Beaux Arts. A bursary allowed him to travel to Brittany in 1910 but he remains best known for his Normandy landscapes in and around Rouen. The present work depicts the Seine at Pré-aux-Loups in Rouen, a view that attracted other Impressionist painters, notably fellow École de Rouen painter Albert Lebourg.
