Native American Woodland Period 3/4-Groove Stone Axe

Native American, Woodland Period. A hardstone axe head, pecked and ground into a weight-forward form, with a dark green-black surface and mineral staining. A three-quarter groove encircles the poll, leaving one face open where the haft was seated and bound with rawhide or sinew. The bit tapers to a rounded working edge, worn from use.
