Native American, Woodland period. A dense ovoid cobble of hardstone pecked and ground into a working maul, its girth encircled by a single deep groove cut to seat a split-withe haft bound with rawhide or sinew. The surface retains its river-worn cortex, mottled gray-green and cream with dark mineral staining, while the groove walls show the fine peck-scars of manufacture. Both blunt ends are battered from use, the expected signature of a percussive tool employed for driving wedges, crushing bone, or dressing other stone. A drilled perforation appears to be a much later addition, likely made to suspend or mount the piece rather than to serve any original function. Small in scale, the maul belongs to a long-lived North American tool tradition in which form followed the hand and the haft. Full-grooved mauls and hammers represent one of the most conservative technologies in North American prehistory, changing little across millennia because the design was already efficient: a groove pecked around the stone's circumference allowed a flexible wooden withe to be bent around it and lashed tight, converting a hand-held cobble into a hafted striking tool with vastly greater force. Groove profile carries some chronological and regional signal, with three-quarter and full-groove variants distributed differently across the Eastern Woodlands, Plains, and Southwest, though isolated surface finds rarely permit a narrow attribution on form alone.
