Nautiloid - Fossilised animal - cymatoceras - 12 cm - 7.5 cm

Cymatoceras is a fossil genus of nectonic marine cephalopod mollusks, with documentation dating back to the Early Cambrian. Morphologically, the Cretaceous specimens shared many features with modern Nautilus. The shell is globose, with a rounded whorl cross-section, planispiral, ranging from slightly evolved to involute with closed umbilici. The Cymatoceras species were nektonic, active hunters, with feeding habits considered, in line with current examples, to be protein consumers. The shell thickness of Cymatoceras seems to indicate greater resistance to hydrostatic pressure in deep waters. It has been calculated that they could reach depths of up to 250 m, given that the simple septa of nautiloids are adapted to high hydrostatic pressures. Incredibly beautiful lot: an object of perfect size for display within a collection. Stand not included, made from reclaimed/recycled material and used for photographic purposes only.
