NEPAL, Kathmandu Valley - Lot 88

NEPAL, Kathmandu Valley A mask of the demon Lakhé, made of embossed and lacquered copper, with a red complexion, wide-open eyes, upturned lips revealing teeth and two fixed fangs, and a wrinkled, flattened nose. On the back, a padded fabric strip ensures the dancer’s comfort. (chips in the lacquer). H. 33 cm Lakhe is a major demonic figure in Nepalese folklore, particularly prominent in the Newar culture of the Kathmandu Valley. Traditionally depicted with a ferocious face, prominent fangs, and a thick mane of red, white, or black hair, it is said to have once lived in the forests before becoming a protective figure for communities. During major festivals, dancers don his papier-mâché mask and his hair made of yak tails to perform dances in the streets featuring abrupt and spectacular movements, accompanied by percussion. The most famous is the Majipa Lakhey, revered as a deity during the Yenya (Indra Jatra) festival in Kathmandu, where he dances through the city, followed by musicians and devotees who present him with offerings.
