This “official” currency of Esperantists was minted at the Royal Mint under Mint Master Dr. J.W.A. van Hengel in 1960 as a fictitious means of payment at Esperanto congresses. It was the association Universala Ligo that created the stelo. On April 14, 1942, precisely 25 years after his death, L.L. Zamenhof was secretly honored in a private residence in The Hague by a group of loyal Esperantists. The group had prior experience with the tyranny of the occupation (Esperantists were persecuted) and wished to undertake something concrete to save humanity from a “world catastrophe.” After discussion they all decided to establish a world organization named Universala Ligo (UL) with the main goal of carrying out Zamenhof’s original program, namely to unite humanity with one common auxiliary language.
