orthern Netherlands – Republic – Holland – ¼ guilder 1759 – Dordrecht Silver · ¼ guilder · 1759 · Dordrecht · cable edge A strikingly sharply struck quarter guilder from Holland, minted at Dordrecht in 1759. The specimen is distinguished by a powerful strike, well-centered, richly raised relief and the characteristic cable edge, prominently visible all around. Obverse: Crowned shield of Holland with the rising lion, the sword raised and the bundle of arrows in the other claw. The year 17 – 59 sits on either side of the shield. Around the legend: MO : ARG : ORD : FŒD : BELG : HOLL Reverse: Standing Dutch Maiden in richly draped garments, leaning against a decorated column. In her raised hand she holds a spear with a liberty cap, one of the distinctive symbols of freedom and independence within the Republic. Around the legend: HANC TVEMVR • HAC NITIMVR Free translation: We defend this, we rely on this. The quarter guilder represented five silver sous and belonged to the silver denominations of the Republic. The type uniquely combines the political visual language of the eighteenth-century Republic: the crowned Holland shield on one side and the Dutch Maiden with a liberty cap on the other. For this specimen, particular attention should be given to the powerful execution of the main designs. The Dutch lion is assertive in the planchet, with sword, bundle of arrows and body contours clearly delineated. The large crown above the shield also shows numerous separate ornamentations. On the reverse, the Dutch Maiden stands out strongly, with great detail in the face, the folds of the clothing, the spear with the liberty cap and the richly decorated column. The legends are convincingly present around the edge as well. The surface shows a uniform silver-gray patina with subtle green-gray nuances. In the recessed areas the toning is slightly darker, which further emphasizes the high relief and fine details. The combination of the calm patina and the lighter elevated parts gives the coin pronounced depth and a well-kept, authentic appearance. An interesting distinctive feature is the cable edge. In combination with the bold strike, well-centered minting and the richly raised relief, this edge execution gives the specimen an exceptionally strong overall presentation. A striking appealing quarter guilder with richly preserved relief, sharply defined main designs, an almost fully present edge and a calm, naturally appearing silver-gray patina. A specimen that immediately catches the eye due to its powerful execution and visual depth. Holland · Dordrecht · 1759 · ¼ guilder · silver · cable edge
