Netherlands, West Friesland Duit 1739 (No reserve price)

Netherlands, West Friesland Duit 1739 (No reserve price)

West-Friesland – Duit 1739 – Enkhuizen – Muntmeester Jan Knol Noordelijke Nederlanden – Republiek der Zeven Verenigde Nederlanden – West-Friesland – Muntplaats Enkhuizen Characteristic copper duit from 1739, struck in Enkhuizen under the responsibility of the mint master Jan Knol, recognisable by his personal mint mark: the knolrap. This provincial issue dates from the eighteenth century, when Enkhuizen still held an important place within West Frisian coin history. The city boasted a rich maritime and commercial tradition and was, during the Republic, one of the leading towns on the former Zuiderzee. The offered specimen features an attractive dark patina with brown and green nuances. The crowned provincial coat of arms, the two rising lions, and the surrounding foliate ornaments are clearly visible. Obverse: The inscription WEST / FRI / SIA, divided over three lines, with the year 1739 beneath. Above it the mint mark of Jan Knol, the knolrap, framed by decorative ornaments. Translation: West-Friesland, 1739. Reverse: The crowned shield of Westfriesland with two lions placed one above the other. The shield is flanked on both sides by ornamental laurel branches. Historical background The duit represented a value of 1/8 stuiver, or 1/160 gulden, and formed an indispensable part of daily payment traffic. While the large silver and gold trade coins of the Republic enjoyed international renown, it was precisely these small copper coins that enabled everyday life on the street, in shops, at markets, and in inns. The mint mark of Jan Knol constitutes an interesting personal detail. The knolrap directly references his surname and makes this issue recognizable within the West Frisian coin series. Specifications * Issuing authority: West-Friesland * Mint location: Enkhuizen * Year: 1739 * Denomination: 1 duit * Material: Copper * Mint master: Jan Knol * Mint mark: Knolrap * Period: Republic of the Seven United Netherlands Literature references: Verkade 76.4 | Purmer & van der Wiel 3010 | HNPM 71 | CNM 2.46.96 | Pannekeet 130 An historically appealing West-Frisian duit from the mint town Enkhuizen, with a recognizable provincial coat of arms and the characteristic mint mark of Jan Knol.
