Material: Silver 987/1000 Ag and Copper 13/1000 Cu in accordance with XRF measurement Weight: 3.44 grams Reference: Schulman 846 ex. S.A.V.E. collection Quality: VF ex. montage Extra info On May 13, 2024, during the Heritage Auctions Europe coin and banknote auction in IJsselstein, an exceptionally rare ORIGINAL quarter from 1891 bearing the young queen Wilhelmina was sold for a record amount of €1,045,500. This is the highest price ever paid for a Dutch coin. The silver coin weighs only 3.5 grams and is one of only two known specimens. The other specimen is in the National Numismatic Collection at De Nederlandsche Bank. The issued quarter has, in its 133-year history, had only four owners, including the American collector Virgil Brand and the legendary collector Philip Ferrari de Renotière, but also that of the original Mint Master H.L.A. van den Wall Bake, under whose authority this coin was struck. The last owner, the Dutch numismatist W. Coenen, has now sold it for a new record price. The buyer, who bid online, wishes to remain anonymous. That 1891 quarter is regarded as one of the rarest and most sought-after Dutch coins, partly due to its unique history and limited mintage. This quarter is an exceptionally good copy of the original, with Wilhelmina's open mouth. Initially it was suspected to be a bronze strike (valued at about €12,000), later silvered to be worn on a chain, but the XRF confirmed it is indeed a silver specimen. Given the patina, signs of circulation on the surface, and the removed loop, a modern copy can be ruled out. Also a year-date alteration can be ruled out because in the subsequent years the portrait by engraver W. Schammer was partly adjusted (the open mouth was replaced by a closed mouth before minting in 1892). Getting a similar 1891 quarter is virtually impossible, and as far as we know this forgery is extremely RARE! This lot is offered in our special SSA Numistrust selection auction, this special 6th auction runs until the last Tuesday of the month.
