A Monumental Proof Trophy for the Specialist Type-VI Santa Clause Vignette New York, New York. Knickerbocker Bank of the City of New York. 18xx $2. PCGS Currency Very Choice New 64 PPQ. Proof. Plate A. Imprint of Baldwin, Adams & Co. New York. Vignette of Federal Hall as it stood around the time of Washington's first inauguration at center with additional buildings evident in the background. Below, bank title and associated guarantee text. State die at left below two distinct counters. Rhomboid counter at right emblazoned "TWO" with "Type VI" Santa Claus vignette below depicting the gift-giving saint as an elf-like figure sitting at the fireside with a toy in his right hand. A total of (6) rounded POCs may be seen above the signature panels and manufacturer's imprint at left. PCGS Currency comments "Mounted on Cardstock & Hole Punch Cancelled." The "Type-VI" Santa Claus Vignette Excessively rare and represented by only two notes in issued form. The "Type-VI" Santa Claus vignette is the second rarest of all the vignettes described by Roger H. Durand in Interesting Notes About Christmas save for the enigmatic "Type-VII" which eludes collectors in any form. Here the depiction of Santa Claus echoes the depiction favored by the Saint Nicholas Bank which used a composition dubbed the "Type-II," but considering the rarity of the "Type-VI" even in Proof form, it takes little to reason that this item offers a real opportunity to be had. Our Summer 2026 Global Showcase Auction (Lot 20196) realized a record-breaking figure of $46,360 for this vignette in issued form against a conservative estimate suggesting that our estimate here may also prove to be rather conservative in retrospect. Estimate: $15,000 - $25,000. Provenance: From the Caine Collection. Earlier ex. Roger H. Durand Santa Claus Collection.
