At Dominico Raillard, 1722 4 total volumes (complete historical work in 3 volumes + 1 related volume by the same author) Extraordinary and important set of four volumes printed in Naples at the beginning of the eighteenth century, comprising the monumental historical work and the famous poetical-scientific composition by Niccolò Partenio Giannettasio, a distinguished scholar and Neapolitan Jesuit. Historia Neapolitana (1713) – 3 Volumes: The work represents one of the most ambitious attempts of the early Enlightenment to narrate the history of the Kingdom of Naples from its origins to the viceregal era. Dedicated to Prince Carlo Pacecco Carafa, Duke of Maddaloni, the discourse ranges from the Greek and Roman foundations to the medieval, Angevin, Aragonese, and Spanish epochs. The text is enriched by woodcut headpieces depicting the Jesuit monogram IHS with floral decorations, decorative initials, and finished pieces engraved. In 8vo, pp. 476, 534, 566 n. Annus Eruditus / Stata Tempora (1722) – 1 Volume: A poetical collection of considerable literary and antiquarian value. The first part, Ver Herculanum, offers a poetic and erudite description of the roughness and charms of the Vesuvian and Ercolanese territory, written with notable anticipation of the official archaeological rediscovery of Ercolano. The second part, Aestates Surrentina, is devoted to the Sorrentine Peninsula, with ecclesiastical approvals dated 1696 and reprinted in 1715 and 1722. In 8vo, pp. 185 n. (Ver Herculanum) - 198 n. (Aestates Surrentina) Bindings in half-leather with corners in excellent condition. The spines perfectly firm, with intact joints, heads well preserved, and gilding particularly bright and lustrous. Very slight and imperceptible signs of shelf-wear on the boards and the margins of the covers, utterly negligible. In the first volume of Historia Neapolitana, at the frontispiece and the opening leaves there are light and ancient halos of moisture and marginal foxing that do not affect legibility of the text. Presence of old paper restorations along the inner/lower margin of the frontispiece of Volume I. Some leaves show physiological browning and slight reddening due to the paper type of the era. Wide margins, sturdy and crisp leaves, absence of worming or significant loss of text. Overall a very pleasing, solid and fresh copy, perfectly usable. Niccolò Partenio Giannettasio (Naples, 1648 – Massa Lubrense, 1715) was a renowned mathematician, poet and historian belonging to the Society of Jesus. A teacher at the Massimo College of Naples, he was a prominent figure in the Neapolitan cultural milieu at the turn of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, famed for his refined production in Latin elegiac and epic poetry.
