Alla auktioner / Diverse / Nicolas de Largillière (1656-1746), Circle of - Portrait de Gentilhomme
- Oil on canvas. Early 20th-century re-entelado painting. Magnificent technique. - This superb portrait of an apparatus, typical of the French school of the late 17th century, embodies the sumptuousness of Louis XIV's court through a first-rate technical execution. The work stands out for the representation of an imposing allonge Babilonian wig, the ultimate symbol of status, whose volume and highlights reveal the hand of a master of court portraiture. The composition, elegantly inscribed in an oval trompe l’oeil—an effect favored by Pierre Mignard to confer nobility and three-dimensionality—highlights the figure of a gentleman of high birth whose identity is reinforced by the distinction of his gesture and a prominent ring. The masterful treatment of the lace jabot, which emerges with vibrant clarity against the sobriety of the dark silks, places this piece in the orbit of the young Nicolas de Largillière, celebrating the splendor and psychology of French aristocracy with a firm and sumptuous brushwork. - Image dimensions without frame: 55 x 70 cm / 69.5 x 83.5 cm with exclusive antique-inspired custom frame. - Montbaron Gallery attaches a technical data sheet prepared by a art historian titled with all its lots.
