The Saracca Romagnola is one of the most characteristic popular knives of the central-northern Italian tradition and its roots go back to the daily life of rural Romagna between the 19th and early 20th centuries. The curious name derives from the “saracca,” the salted and dried herring that once constituted a simple yet valuable food in the countryside. The long, slender, tapered shape of the herring is said to have inspired the name given to this particular type of knife. In Romagnol tradition it is also known as “curtel cun el riz,” a designation referring to the distinctive “crest” on the spring, a feature that facilitates unlocking the mechanism by lever action.
