The shell is in the coveted F+++ condition – the characteristic dark chocolate brown coloration with the white, interrupted spiral cords is distinctively preserved. Since antiquity (especially by the Phoenicians), related species were used to obtain the precious purple dye, which was reserved for kings and emperors. Purpura persica also oozes a milky secretion when irritated, which oxidizes to a deep violet under light. Lifestyle: These predatory sea snails are typical inhabitants of the intertidal zone. They cling to rocks exposed to strong surf. With their strong radula (rasping tongue) and acidic secretions, they hunt other mollusks such as acrothoracican barnacles, clams, or smaller Gastropoda, boring through their shells. Origin: This species is widespread throughout the tropical Indo-Pacific. It prefers flat, oxygen-rich reef crests and rocky coastal areas.
