Curated collection of antique, vintage and modern rugs No Reserve - Antique Khotan Rug, East Turkestan, late 19th or early 20th century Size: 4 ft 8 in x 3 ft 8 in (1.42 m x 1.12 m) Provenance: Property of a European estate A particularly appealing small-format Khotan rug displaying the refined simplicity and intercultural design vocabulary of East Turkestan weaving. Khotan’s oasis location encouraged the blending of Chinese Buddhist imagery, Central Asian geometry, and Persian-derived floral ornament into a recognizable regional style. The compact format makes this example especially suitable for display as a collectible textile, where the character of its drawing and subtle color relationships may be appreciated at close range. Its size also distinguishes it from the long gallery-format carpets more commonly associated with Khotan production. Condition Request Condition Report Lot #419 is in fair condition. The pile is low with areas of foundation showing. There are scattered minor areas of re-piled and repaired spots in the rug. The two ends and sides are hand secured.
