Fang Statue: meaning / significance They are generally carved from wood. Human figures often have a large head, a stylized face, and an elongated body. Some statues were associated with the worship of ancestors and with the protection of the community. The Fang are particularly known for their reliquary figures, called byeri, which were linked to the preservation and protection of ancestors’ relics. Fang sculpture has also had a major influence on the history of African art and has fascinated many artists.
