European School (19th century) - Saint Bishop Doctor of the Church and Cherub with the Alphabet - Oil on copper The rare iconography: The presence of the cherub holding a tablet with the alphabet (A-B-C-D-E-F) is a fascinating attribute that directly references the Doctors of the Church or the patron saints of education/schools (such as Saint Cassian or Saint Augustine teaching). It’s an excellent sales point ("unusual didactic detail"). The support: Be sure to specify that this is oil on copper plate, a support highly sought after for the finesse of the details it enables. Technique • oil on copper plate (typical thickness and back oxidation, with old handwritten numbering). • Very good overall conservation: minimal wear, a few tiny superficial micro-cracks, no structural gaps. • Pigments and varnish consistent with an 18th-century execution. Frame Magnificent carved and gilded wood frame, 19th century, with a very ornate Rocaille decoration: scrolls, flowers, shells, deep reliefs. Gilding slightly worn, but coherent and decorative. The painting is perfectly mounted in this frame, ready to display. Dimensions • Copper plate (sight): 15.5 × 11.5 cm • Framed dimensions: 30 × 27.5 cm Provenance Former private collection (old numbering on the back: no. 4068). Condition Very good overall condition for its age. No visible restorations. Sturdy frame. Photos are an integral part of the object description and complement the presentation. They allow you to appreciate its condition and features. Please examine them carefully before any commitment. The item will be carefully packed and shipped with tracking number, to guarantee fast and secure delivery. Happy bidding
