NORWAY. 1/2 Speciedaler, 1649. Christiania Mint. Frederik III. NGC

ORWAY. 1/2 Speciedaler, 1649. Christiania Mint. Frederik III. NGC EF Details--Tooled. KM-36; Hede-11A; Sieg-16.1; NMD-116A; Aagaard-12.1 (49-1/49-1); Delzanno-122; Schou-25; Bruun-9601. Weight: 14.18 gms. Mintmaster: Peter Grüner, the Elder (PG). Engraver: Johan v. Rieger (?) (obverse). Despite being tooled in the fields, the coin still presents well. Out of the handful of examples recorded, this is the only one in private hands. It has been suggested that the (somewhat crude) portrait was executed by the Norwegian ensign Johan v. Rieger, who is otherwise only known for the Norwegian medal struck in connection with the Hereditary Homage. It must be considered an oversight that Hede (and consequently Sieg) did not treat this issue as a separate type. Estimate: €14,000 - €18,000. Provenance: From the L.E. Bruun Collection. Ex: Joh. G. Guildal Collection (Private Sale - 1918); later published by the Danish Numismatic Society as item 1174 in his collection. Ex: Carl T. Jørgensen Collection (Private Sale - 1901). Ex: Alfred Benzon Collection (Copenhagen - 1887) Lot # 925. To view supplemental information and all items from the L.E. Bruun Collection, click here. Please note: Bid amounts do not include VAT. Buyers which are non-VAT registered entities or individuals who take delivery of lots within EU countries subject to margin scheme taxation will be invoiced a VAT charge and a Buyer’s Premium for a total of 27.5% based upon the total amount of the hammer.
