2. English Translation (Auction Description) France / Franche-Comté – Late Medieval Officiality Document from Besançon (1498/99): Large-Format, Magnificent Vellum Document with Autograph Notary Signature (Guillaboz), Concerning Real Estate, Rent, and Property Transactions in the Bouclans Region under the Jurisdiction of the Free County of Burgundy Description of the Object: An exceptional, museum-grade document from the late 15th century of immense legal-historical, regional, and paleographic significance: • Place of Issue & Date: Officiality of the City and Diocese of Besançon (Official de la Cité et Diocèse de Besançon), issued on July 22, 1498 (with the internal text dating to the years 1498/99). • Format & Material: Large-format, folded original vellum sheet in wonderful preservation with fine contemporary folds and authentic dark brown iron gall ink. • Legal Content: An official certification by the ecclesiastical high court of Besançon (the spiritual court of the Franche-Comté). Negotiated and sealed in the presence of the sworn notary Guillaboz, the document governs complex property, sales, rent, and mortgage rights concerning lands, fields, meadows, and estates (including in Bouclans). Contracting parties include local figures such as Jean Regoney, Jehan Thomas, Claude Monneret, and others. • Notary Signature: At the end of the Latin-French legal text, featuring the elaborate, characteristic paraph and autograph signature of notary Guillaboz ("Guillaboz notarius"). • Archival History: The reverse side bears an archival annotation (dated "22 juillet 1498 / 1498"), while the internal text confirms the exact dating to the late 15th century ("mil quatre vings et dix-huit / dix-neuf"). Historical & Regional Context: The year 1498 falls into a fascinating era: the Free County of Burgundy and the Archdiocese of Besançon were under Habsburg influence (Maximilian I.), while bordering the French kingdom to the west under Charles VIII and Louis XII. In the late Middle Ages, the ecclesiastical officiality was the authoritative instance for certifying property transactions, annuities, and debts, guaranteeing the highest level of legal certainty. Documents of this exceptional preservation from the incunabula period (15th century) are extremely rare on the autograph market. Condition & Preservation: Original vellum with age-appropriate patina, well-preserved folds, and exceptionally legible ink. A top-tier, museum-grade document for specialized collections of European legal and notary history. 3. 4.
