Open space - Gary Westall

Open space by Gary Westall Painting 14.0 x 11.0 :: Sometimes a painting comes into being precisely because you need something different. I painted this work as a deliberate counterbalance to another piece I’m currently working on which requires a great deal of precision structure and attention to detail. Here I allowed the opposite to happen: working freely reacting spontaneously and simply letting the paint take effect. It was painted with oil paints applied almost exclusively with a painting knife. The impasto layers the visible textures and every trace in the application of paint tell a story of part of the creative process. Signed lower right.
