Ornate Déco Brooch with Diamonds and Sapphires, c. 1930

This brooch could hardly have been more finely crafted: Delicate, hand-sawn shadow gaps, meticulous millegrains and suitably cut sapphires enrich the elongated basic shape of the design with a seemingly endless wealth of details. On closer inspection, the surface of the brooch turns out to be a latticework of platinum, sapphires and glittering diamonds. An old-cut diamond weighing around 0.25 ct is set in the center of the design, while 30 other small rose-cut diamonds are scattered across the brooch. Its shape, the design of the brooch and the combination of platinum and yellow gold allow it to be dated to around 1930. Despite the creativity of the design, its modern, angular abstraction is characteristic of German Art Deco. The finely crafted frames of synthetic blue sapphires, which were inserted as calibrated, cut design elements, match this. The brooch is a masterpiece of craftsmanship, one of those pieces that could never be copied well - but which could only be created through many hours of skilled manual work.
