Overmantel mirror - Wood - Masonic Lodge Mirror

This rare Freemason trumeau mirror, typical of lodge mirrors (where its members gather), is recognizable by its attributes or decorative ornaments characteristic of the symbolism of this brotherhood. Of Neo-classical style, it achieves, through its design, to spread across the entire mirror its recognition symbols: a five-pointed star at the foot of each column topped by an Ionic capital (depicting a pentagram or the symbol of man in the universe); the frieze of the pediment itself presents an applied stucco decoration, Moorish-inspired, and centers on an inverted square, symbolizing one of the Mason's tools with the presence at its center of the Great Architect of the Universe. (scholars will offer a more learned description). By its style, we can place it between 1870 and 1880, French-made. It was originally silvered. Its old argent mirror bears a few signs of wear that attest to its authenticity. The back is made of a parquet of thin fir boards.
