Paavo Tynell (Finnish, 1890-1973), Rare Snowflake Chandelier, Model 9041

Finland, for Taito Oy, circa 1950, brass, three sockets reflect light upwards through (40) mesh snowflakes, impressed manufacturer's mark to socket 'TT 9041 Made in Finland'. Approximately 35 x 43 x 43 in. From the Collection of a Well Traveled Lady, Chapel Hill, North Carolina Acquired by the consignor's parents for their 1950 Texas home; this is the first time being offered since it's original purchase. The Snowflake chandelier is considered a masterpiece of 20th-century Scandinavian lighting. Tynell moved away from the sleek, utilitarian "Machine Age" functionalism of his early career toward a romantic, lyrical style. Inspired by Finnish winters and traditional straw Yuletide ornaments, the chandelier uses a perforated brass bowl and delicate, hand-crafted mesh "snowflakes" suspended on wire springs or rods. When illuminated, the fixture projects a warm, candle-like glow. The light filters through the perforated center and reflects off the floating brass elements, casting intricate, shifting shadow patterns across the ceiling and room. Originally introduced around the time Finland House opened in New York City in 1948, the Snowflake series helped catapult Tynell's reputation far beyond Finland. While some domestic critics initially found its romantic ornamentation too decorative, it became immensely popular in the American market. As found estate condition with oxidation, tarnish, and rubbing to brass; some later suspension wires to the snowflakes; white paint flaking with some age toning; old likely original wiring with some degradation to casing (not tested).
