He was one of the greatest and most-influential artists of the 20th century and the creator (with Georges Braque) of Cubism. Picasso’s work remains a tribute to the vitality of the “disquieting” Spaniard with the “sombre…piercing” eyes who superstitiously believed that work would keep him alive. For nearly 80 of his 91 years, Picasso devoted himself to an artistic production that contributed significantly to and paralleled the whole development of modern art in the 20th century. Picasso’s most prized paintings derive from various stages in his life: the early-career Rose and Blue periods and his groundbreaking experiments in Cubism, through his output in the years leading up to and during World War II up to the late 1960s, when he was already world famous. Central to Picasso’s oeuvre are portraits of his various muses: Marie-Thérèse Walter, Dora Maar, Françoise Gilot, and Jacqueline Roque, each of whom the artist had a series of complicated affairs. These portraits, which range from sensual to tormented, have become some of the most recognizable in art history. Pablo Picasso stands alongside other major modern masters such as Georges Braque, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró or Juan Gris. He is regarded as an icon of 20th-century visual culture, comparable to other major cultural figures such as Keith Haring, Banksy, Mark Rothko, Damien Hirst or Pierre Soulages, both for his unparalleled artistic legacy and for the enduring international demand and strong market valuation of his work.
