PAINTING "WOMAN WITH A FEATHER BOA" by Philippe DE ROUGEMONT (1891–1965) Framed oil on canvas, signed lower right. Depicts a woman with wavy blonde hair, wearing a red dress and a red boa, typical of the 1930s and 1940s. Dimensions: approx. 65 x 54 cm. As is, with minor scratches and a small scuff. He was born in Lille but grew up in Paris and Neuchâtel, Switzerland, the city where his family originated. After training as an engineer, he moved to Paris to study art. There, he came into contact with artists such as Utrillo and Modigliani. He had many connections within the Swedish art scene, and it was there that he met his future wife, the artist Sigrid Wahlström. De Rougemont became known for his portraits, particularly through commissions from Swedish dignitaries such as King Gustav V and Prince Carl. His work often features female nudes, characterized by a rhythmic composition and an expressive brushstroke. His paintings are included in public collections, including the Gothenburg Maritime Museum and the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs Trained in the European figurative tradition and active primarily in Sweden, Philippe de Rougemont developed a personal artistic language at the intersection of several artistic sensibilities. His treatment of the nude evokes the elegant restraint of Félix Vallotton, while the sensuality of the model recalls certain female portraits by Kees van Dongen. His use of color and pursuit of harmony can also be compared to the intimist works of Pierre Bonnard, Jean Gabriel Domergue, and Joaquin Sorolla, as well as to certain portraits by Anders Zorn, a major figure in Scandinavian painting and the Impressionist movement.
