PATRIOTY. Republican Sketches. No. 3. Not here, General; you - Lot 257

PATRIOTY. Republican Sketches. No. 3. Not here, General; your place is at the podium of the Assembly. Paris, Deforet and César, booksellers and publishers, 64 Rue Neuve-des-Petits-Champs; Talons Printing House, 19 Marché Saint-Honoré, [1871]. Large lithograph, partially colored, signed “Patrioty” in the stone. Parliamentary caricature set in the National Assembly of 1871. A general is vigorously challenged from the rostrum and symbolically sent “to the bar of the Assembly.” The composition contrasts military power with parliamentary oversight against the backdrop of the extremely tense period following the defeat of 1870 and the fall of the Second Empire. A beautiful composition, enlivened by numerous deputies in the galleries and enhanced by a remarkable pink background. A few foxing spots, a horizontal crease, and minor marginal imperfections.
