The frame is original from the period and has its protective glass. Paulo Ghiglia (Florence, March 5, 1905 – Rome, November 19, 1979) was an Italian painter. He began painting at a very young age with his father and master Oscar; at twenty he left his father's house and moved to La Verna, where he lived for about five years. He made his debut in Milan in 1929 at the Pesaro Gallery together with his father Oscar and his brother Valentino, also a painter. In 1931 he participated in the first Quadriennale di Roma: thanks to Petrolini, his close friend, he was introduced to the capital, where he began the period of portraits. He stayed in Paris where he portrayed Joséphine Baker. He returns to Rome, which will remain, together with Florence, Livorno and La Verna, the place of greatest inspiration; in the forties and fifties his production concentrates on portraits of illustrious people, of monkeys, and of Isa Miranda. In the sixties he stays for a long time in California, in Los Angeles and San Francisco, depicting the world of Hollywood cinema; at the end of the decade he moves again to La Verna, in Tuscany, where a new impressionist-oriented painting leads him to major public exhibitions, including the 1973 Florence show at Palazzo Strozzi, in Rome at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni of the Quadriennale, and in 1975 in Assisi with a large exhibition on Saint Francis. His works are in various museums around the world, from the Uffizi, with two self-portraits, to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the La Scala Museum in Milan, the public Ricci Oddi collection of Piacenza, the Livorno Modern Art Museum, the Palazzo Pitti Modern Art Gallery, the Balzan Foundation, the Carima Foundation.
