Pedro Mexia - NO RESERVE - Silva De Varia Lecion Agora...

Pedro Mexía’s Renaissance Forest of Knowledge: The 1603 Antwerp Bellero Silva de varia lecion. MOUSEION CURATOR NOTE “A book shaped like a forest: histories, marvels, moral examples, natural powers, banquets, wine, human achievement, and the remembered wisdom of Greece and Rome all gathered into one vernacular grove. Mexía writes not as a dry compiler, but as a humanist gardener of knowledge.” THE BOOK MEXÍA, Pedro. Silva de varia lecion agora ultimamente emendada, y de la quarta parte anadida. Antwerp: Ivan Bellero, 1603. Collation: Fort in-8, small in-12 format; 8vo, [1] front blank, (16) ff. preliminaries, 898 pp., [2] terminal blanks; Complete. Spanish text. Contemporary vellum, with manuscript title. BOOK DESCRIPTION Pedro Mexía’s Silva de varia lecion is one of the great Renaissance miscellanies of the Spanish language. First published in the sixteenth century and repeatedly reprinted, it offered readers a cultivated treasury of learning drawn from classical and humanist sources: ancient history, memorable deeds, moral exempla, natural philosophy, strange customs, the powers of nature and of man, gastronomy, banquets, wine, and other subjects suitable for learned conversation. Mexía composed the work from Greek and Latin authors read in their original languages. The word Silva is central to the book’s identity. It announces a deliberately varied composition: not a single linear treatise, but a literary “wood” or “forest,” where subjects appear according to the rhythm of curiosity. Modern scholarship has described this miscellany form as a cultivated disorder, an ordo neglectus, in which apparent variety becomes an intellectual and literary method. This very rare 1603 Antwerp edition belongs to the long northern-European afterlife of Mexía’s book. Antwerp was a major center for Spanish-language printing in the Low Countries, and the Bellero/Bellère printing house helped sustain the circulation of Iberian devotional, literary, and humanist works for an international readership. CONDITION REPORT Contemporary vellum with smooth spine; manuscript title to spine and upper edges; red-speckled edges. Binding with discreet soiling, corners worn, and lower edge slightly rubbed. Leaves lightly browned; lower margin short. Repaired loss to pp. 889–898. In short: a rare and desirable Antwerp Spanish edition. The photographs should be consulted, as they form an integral part of the condition report. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION The Silva was one of the books through which Renaissance Europe learned to enjoy knowledge as variety. It is encyclopedic without being an encyclopedia, moral without becoming a sermon, learned without losing narrative pleasure. In the tradition of Aulus Gellius, Macrobius, Pliny, Valerius Maximus, and other ancient authorities, Mexía converts reading into conversation. For a collector, this 1603 Antwerp Bellero edition is compelling for three reasons: its Spanish Renaissance text, its Low Countries imprint, and its survival in contemporary vellum. It represents the continued European circulation of one of Spain’s most successful humanist books, a work that made erudition portable, sociable, and memorable.
