(◊) PERU. Cob 8 Escudos, 1736-L N. Lima Mint. Philip V. NGC MS-64.

A Scarce and Desirable New World Type of Unseen Quality (◊) PERU. Cob 8 Escudos, 1736-L N. Lima Mint. Philip V. NGC MS-64. Fr-7; KM-38.2; Cal-2151; Onza-312. Weight: 27.06 gms. A magnificent high-grade example of this rare piece - the highest graded from this assayer and the only known mint state example of this date. Full date visible in both the legend and central obverse field. Fully lustrous and with clear die-striations from the preparation of the dies, and much of the devices are boldly struck; double-strike as usual for type. Comes with a subtle reddish hue and patches of surface patina indicative of sea salvage, and with an original surface that has missed the grip of jewelry, cleaning or damage from the sea floor. This coin was the largest circulating gold issue of the time, crudely and hastily struck at the Lima Mint under the chief assayer, Joaquín Negrón. Estimate: €20,000 - €25,000.
