Obverse: Owl right, oil lamp atop books left, banner and laurel branch above; Reverse: Inscription "UNIVERSITY/ OF THE/ PHILIPPINES/ DEBATING TEAM/ FIRST TOUR ABROAD/ 1928/ Carlos Romulo/ COACH", stamped Sterling and C. ZAMORA below. A charming piece with a finely engraved inscription displaying light attractive mottled gray patina. The devices are bold and well preserved with nearly intact matte surfaces. A pleasing piece that is sure to be a welcome addition to the next collection it enters. The 1928 University of the Philippines Debate Team, led by Coach Carlos P. Romulo, traveled to the United States and defeated prominent American Collegiate debate squads, including Stanford University, the University of Michigan, the University of Minnesota, the University of Illinois, and the University of Wisconsin. They argued successfully for Philippine Independence and the readiness and capability of the Philippines to maintain an independent, stable government. Coach Romulo would later became a renowned diplomat, Pulitzer Prize winner, and President of the United Nations General Assembly. Estimate: $200 - $300.
