Picture clock - Porcelain, Wood - 1900-1910

Antique French wall clock – Enamel landscape on probable porcelain – Signed DE LA RUE – circa 1900 Fascinating antique wall clock, presumably of French manufacture, dating roughly to the second half of the nineteenth century, featuring a refined decorative panel with a romantic landscape and a mechanical movement. The clock presents a landscape composition of notable ornamental effect, made on a glazed surface, presumably porcelain. The scene depicts a suggestive garden with lush vegetation, a stone fountain, a monumental entrance with columns and arches, and in the background, an imposing castle with medieval towers. The delicate tones of blue, greens, pink, and ochre give the composition a characteristic nineteenth-century Romantic taste. **In the bottom right corner appears the signature «DE LA RUE», whose artistic attribution has not been established.** ## Main features - Type: wall clock in a picture frame. - Origin: France. - Period: circa 1900 - Panel: presumably porcelain with enamel decoration. - Subject: Romantic landscape with a castle, garden, fountain, and monumental architecture. - Visible signature: DE LA RUE. - Frame: gilded wood. Appears to be later than the clock’s period. - Dial: circular with stylized Arabic numerals. - Hands: shaped metal hands. - Movement: mechanical with brass components. ## Movement and marks On the back is the original or at least period mechanical movement, with balance wheel and time regulation. On the mechanism the following are visible: - Engraved number **1831**. - Inscription **DÉPOSÉ**. - Further inscription on the balance-support, not identified with certainty. The number 1831 is shown as the movement mark and not necessarily as the year of manufacture. ## Condition The clock shows signs of age compatible with its presumed antiquity. The gilded frame shows slight signs of use. The mechanical movement is present; its operation is verified. The possible movement overhaul and the completeness of the winding accessories have not been verified. ## Historical and collecting interest A distinctive decorative clock that combines mechanical clockmaking and ornamental art, with a suggestive landscape depiction in Romantic taste. The presence of the signature DE LA RUE, the enamel decoration, and the movement marked DÉPOSÉ make the object interesting for enthusiasts of antique clocks, decorative arts, and nineteenth-century collecting. Dating, French origin, and panel material are preliminary attributions, not certified. The photographs are an integral part of the description and document the object’s actual condition.
