Portrait of a Lady, by Muñoz Terry. Spanish School. 19th Century

Descriptio Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 71 x 40 cm and 92 x 62 cm. The scene depicts a young woman seated on a rustic bench, wrapped in a red cloak and holding a hurdy-gurdy, a traditional instrument that accentuates the costumbrista character of the work. Her melancholic expression, along with her relaxed posture and the open sky in the background, reinforce the introspective sense of the composition. The brushstrokes are loose but careful in the folds of the dress and the definition of the face. Muñoz Tena’s signature, visible in the lower left corner, links the work to an artist with a marked inclination toward idealized popular scenes. The soft light, powdery tones, and simple setting are framed within the Romantic realism of 19th-century Spanish painting, in which landscape and figure are lyrically integrated. Due to its age and history of use, this lot may show signs of wear and previous interventions. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, no specialized technical testing has been performed. The absence of any mention of restorations does not guarantee that none exist. You may request additional information before placing a bid. This does not affect the buyer’s statutory rights.
