Provenance information: Object Registration ID: 941 The current owner (S.N.J. S.) purchased the stamp seal pendant with inscribed design from R.N. in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The previous owner, R.N. of Rotterdam, did not provide a date for when the object entered his collection. According to the previous owner, the object had previously formed part of a private collection in the Netherlands. The date and duration of this earlier ownership were not provided and remain unknown. No further information concerning the earlier ownership history of the object was available from the previous owner. Background Information: This small bronze stamp seal combines a circular engraved matrix with an integral openwork handle and suspension loop, allowing it to be carried or worn when not in use. The seal face bears an engraved design resembling cursive or calligraphic script. Although the forms may suggest an Islamic or Arabic-script tradition, no definitive reading of the inscription is available, and its precise linguistic and geographical attribution therefore remains uncertain. Personal seal matrices were practical instruments of identity and authentication. Impressed into wax or another suitable material, they could reproduce names, inscriptions, symbols or personal devices on correspondence and documents. Their compact size and suspension loops made them convenient personal possessions for merchants, officials and other individuals who required a portable identifying mark. During the 17th and 18th centuries, opean societies maintained extensive commercial and diplomatic connections with the Ottoman Empire, North Africa and the wider Mediterranean and Islamic worlds. Ships, merchants, diplomats and travellers carried commodities and personal possessions across these networks, providing a historical context in which small objects such as seals could circulate far beyond their place of manufacture. Cast in bronze and subsequently engraved, the piece reflects an established tradition of producing durable personal seals in copper alloys. Its combination of functional matrix, decorative handle and portable format illustrates the close relationship between craftsmanship and everyday administrative life. This small seal provides a tangible connection to the movement of people, written communication and personal identity in the interconnected post-medieval world."
