Earlier models (late 16th to early 17th century) more often had a teardrop-shaped bowl. The handle: The handle is straight and has a six-sided or diamond-shaped edge, which is a typical feature of this period. Maker's mark: In the bowl, near the base of the handle, a stamp is visible. This is often a rose mark under a crown, sometimes bearing the initials of the tin smith. This mark served as a quality guarantee for the tin used. Historical Context Material: Tin spoons were cast in moulds. Because pure tin is very soft, a small percentage of lead was often added for strength. Patina: The dark, grayish color of the spoon is called patina. This is a natural oxide layer that protects the metal over the centuries. Shipping method: this lot is shipped well-packaged via DHL or DPD using Catawiki's Smart Shipping.
