Powerful Retro Style Ring With Diamond & Onyx In Rose Gold, Circa 1940

In the late 1930s, Parisian jewellery houses in particular developed a variation of Art Deco that is known today as the "retro style". This new fashion differed from the cool diamond and platinum designs that had characterized the previous decade with warm gold tones and expansive geometric shapes. This new style soon spread throughout the western world This ring is a wonderful example of this fashion. It is designed with strict symmetry and is almost sculptural. In the center is a diamond weighing more than one carat in a gold setting. An onyx frame, cut by hand from a single stone, dramatically sets off the diamond. The onyx is set directly into the steeply rising ring face. The design is abstract and developed from the joy of geometry. The ring is in very good condition and is a wonderful example of a wearable retro style jewel.
