This locket is cut from a solid black onyx. An appliqué of gold, silver, pearls and glittering diamonds is set in the center of the design: We see a rose, with a blossom of pearls in full splendour, as well as a bud of shimmering diamonds. It is a wild rose, perhaps a dog rose (rosa canina), as is often cultivated in gardens in Great Britain. Lockets of this type were created in the second half of the 19th century in many different shapes and designs. They are not always easy to date, but the type of decoration leads us to assume that this locket must have been made around 1880. Beads in yellow gold settings, forming flowers and leaves, were then also used as necklaces and pendants from around this time. You will find many beautiful examples in our store. A glazed compartment on the back allows you to store a picture, a lock of hair or similar souvenirs. This very well-preserved piece of jewellery came to us from London.
