The daughter of the Earl of Berkeley, she had first married Baron Craven. After their divorce, she left England to undertake long travels across Europe, during which she met the Margrave of Anspach. A woman of letters, she began her career with poetry before turning to travel writing. Her Memoirs constitute her final work and provide a retrospective testimony of her life.
