QUEENIE MCKENZIE NAKARRA, Galyah - Texas Downs, 1995

QUEENIE MCKENZIE NAKARRA Gija language, c.1915 - 1998 Galyah - Texas Downs, 1995 ochre on canvas 76 x 101.5 cm signed by artist verso and inscribed: 1497, Galyanh near Texas Downs PROVENANCE The Artist, painted near Texas Downs, Western Australia Coo-ee Art Gallery, New South Wales, Cat No. 1497 Private Collection, Victoria Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Coo-ee Art Gallery EXHIBITED Back to the Board, 14 April - 12 May 2007, Coo-ee Art Gallery, New South Wales This painting depicts Galyah-Texas Downs, the Country where Queenie McKenzie was born and raised, located across the river from Old Texas Station, north-east of Warmun. The work holds a strong sense of place, grounded in lived experience and memory. Rather than describing the landscape in detail, the composition brings forward its defining features, allowing the presence of the site to remain clear and immediate. Broad areas of ochre are laid across the surface with a direct and confident hand, creating a simplified but resolute structure. Forms are reduced to their essential shapes, with shifts in tone indicating the rise of land and the movement through it. The palette is restrained, drawn from natural pigments, reinforcing the connection between the painting and the ground it represents. As one of the first women to begin painting in Warmun, McKenzie played a key role in establishing painting practices for Gija women. Her work carries both personal and cultural knowledge, where the act of painting affirms connection to Country and the stories held within it, while maintaining what must remain unspoken. © QUEENIE MCKENZIE NAKARRA / Copyright Agency, 2026
