Rarity in miniature: Why the 18 mm Triviella phalaera is...

Scientific name: Triviella phalaera (Schilder, 1930) (Synonym: Trivia phalaera). It belongs to the family of coffee shells (Triviidae). Origin (collection region): This species is native to southern Africa. It typically occurs in the cooler waters along the coast of South Africa, often in deeper zones (subtidal), which is why shells are less frequently washed ashore undamaged. Size: 18 mm is an outstanding size for this species. Triviella phalaera ranks among the larger members of the family, and specimens around 18–19 mm are already regarded in collector circles as "large specimens" ("grande"). Morphology: The genus Triviella is often characterized by a somewhat thinner, more rounded shell. The ribs are fine and elegant, giving the shell a very aesthetic structure. Quality grade: GEM. An absolutely flawless shell. Since South African waters are known for strong currents and rough seas, shells from there often bear fine impact marks. A perfect GEM piece is therefore an excellent standard for collections. Insured shipping via DHL Sale and shipping only within the EU
