Raymond Trameau (1897-1985) is a French multidisciplinary artist (painter, sculptor, enameler and ceramist) particularly recognized for his contribution to abstract art and the musicalist movement. • Training and early figurative work Born in Paris in 1897, he began his artistic training in 1914 by attending the École Pratique des Arts Appliqués et Décoratifs de Paris. In 1920, he joined the Ateliers d'Art. During the interwar period, his output initially aligned with figurative art. During this time he regularly exhibited his paintings (notably nudes and Fauvist scenes) at the famous Salon des Indépendants in Paris. • The turning toward abstraction and Musicalism The year 1947 marked a radical turning point in his career when he befriended painter Henri Valensi, leader of the musicalist movement. His work then abandoned figuration in favor of a strongly geometrized abstraction, playing with triangular, striped or speckled forms. Inspired by musicalism, Trameau composed his canvases by exploiting the “emotional resonances of colors.” He sought to make the canvas vibrate like a musical score, animating his compositions with flowing ribbons (often black) and intense chromatic contrasts, which he developed in oil, gouache or watercolor. He subsequently exhibited repeatedly at the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles. • A master of enamel Trameau established himself as a major innovator in the art of enamel, mastering the techniques of champlevé and cloisonné enamels with a rigor praised by critics. • Recognition Listed in Bénézit, the artist has exhibited in numerous galleries in France and internationally, and his works continue to energize the art market.
