René Descartes - La Philosophie Morale - 1707

[RENE DESCARTES] The Moral Philosophy of Monsieur Descartes, concerning the Passions of the Soul, and by occasion the whole Nature of Man; the last Work he gave to the Public. New Edition, Corrected and augmented with various Notes by Mr. *** Professor of Philosophy. In Brussels, at François Foppens, 1707. One volume in-12, bound in full brown marbled calf of the period, spine with raised bands ornamented with gilded compartments, title piece in brown morocco. The work presents a title page printed in black, adorned with an engraved vignette of a mascaron type framed by scrolls, with the king’s privilege mention. The period binding in marbled calf shows rubbing and wear to the heads and corners, while the interior preserves a fine freshness with margins well-preserved around the carefully set typography from Foppens’ workshop. This interesting early eighteenth-century edition offers the famous treatise by René Descartes on The Passions of the Soul, published here under the title “Moral Philosophy.” It is the very last work completed by Descartes during his life (initially published in 1649), in which the philosopher attempts to analyze human emotions scientifically and mechanistically by relating them to the mind–body dualism. This edition is distinguished by the addition of critical and explanatory notes written by an anonymous professor of philosophy, attesting to the reception and teaching of Cartesianism in the Spanish Netherlands at the turn of the century. Publishing Descartes’ works under the title Moral Philosophy in Brussels at François Foppens illustrates how much the French philosopher’s thought—long censored or dreaded by the Catholic religious authorities—had become institutionalized and eventually integrated into official university curricula. Indeed, The Passions of the Soul constituted for professors of the time the perfect compromise: a bridge between rigorous physiology and Christian morality, allowing Cartesianism to be taught without running afoul of ecclesiastical censorship. Good copy of this rare volume."
