RESTORED ALUMINUM STRONGBOX Exceptional miniature John Port patent safe, likely produced as a salesman’s sample or demonstration model, constructed as a detailed scaled representation of a full-size commercial safe. The substantial rectangular case is finished in high-gloss black and extensively reinforced with metal perimeter straps and numerous raised rivet heads. The top features a heavy polished carrying handle surrounded by decorative red and green pinstriping, gilt borders, corner flourishes and central scrollwork. The front door is particularly striking, decorated with gilt floral corner motifs and centered by a large silver-tone cast maker’s plaque. The elaborate relief plaque depicts two allegorical figures flanking a central safe and is prominently marked “JOHN PORT” and “PATENT SAFE MANUFACTURER,” with additional patent information and Manchester identification. A small key-operated lock is positioned to the left of the plaque. The heavy hinged door opens to the side to a deep black-finished interior compartment. The combination of miniature scale, substantial riveted construction, prominent manufacturer’s plaque and elaborate decorative finish strongly suggests that the piece was intended as a salesman’s demonstration or promotional safe, showcasing the appearance and construction of John Port’s full-size safes. An unusual and highly decorative piece of British safe-making and industrial history, with particular appeal to collectors of salesman’s samples, antique safes, locks, banking memorabilia and mechanical advertising.
