Clocks as Works of Art - Meentwijck Collection 1890-1940 Publication accompanying exhibition in 2007 Extensively illustrated (see photos) Good condition. Important document for collectors and dealers of clocks. "From December 15, 2007 to and including May 4, 2008 the Dutch Museum of Gold-, Silver- and Clocks in Schoonhoven presented the exhibition Clocks as Works of Art, Meentwijck Collection 1890-1940. It is for the first time that this subcollection of about eighty Dutch clocks is shown in its entirety at an exhibition. The clocks represent a period known for innovations in decorative arts: De Nieuwe Kunst, the Dutch variant of Art Nouveau, 1880-1910, the Amsterdam School and Expressionism, 1910-1930, and finally the Hague School, the Dutch variant of Art Deco, from around 1925. The collection includes well-known designers such as H.P. Berlage, Jan Eisenloeffel, Jac. van den Bosch and Hildo Krop, but also less-known names like Jan Kriege, Conrad Fehn, H. Stroeve and A.F. van der Weij. Around 1900 the Dutch clockmaker was largely interested in the technical side of timepieces rather than the form. It was architects, furniture designers and decorative artists who took care of the clock’s appearance. They regarded the clock as part of the total interior design and applied contemporary stylistic ideas. Much attention was paid to the finish of the case and the dial. Typically artisanal techniques such as enamelling, engraving and chasing were used. The clock mechanism is often produced in series, of secondary importance and originating from renowned French and sometimes also German factories. The clocks on display are part of the renowned art collection, the Meentwijck Collection. This name is derived from a villa in ’t Gooi, designed in 1912 as a residence by the architect Karel P.C. de Bazel. Since 1985 the villa has been inhabited by the collecting couple Dirk and Liesbeth Nienhuis and also serves as a setting for an impressive collection of Dutch art and applied art from 1890-1940. The clocks shown display a rich variety of forms. Thus there is the strict, rational style of Berlage alongside the elegant contours of the ceramic pieces. A particularly notable piece is the bronze Amsterdam School clock by Theo Vos, shaped like a twisting cockatoo pair. Carefully packed with tr&trace and insured for shipping. Good luck with bidding!!"
