Pothier does not merely reproduce the text of the custom: he accompanies it with a general introduction and with individual introductions placed before each title, in which he explains and develops the relevant legal principles. Thus the work covers essential subjects of private law in the Ancien Régime: the status of persons and goods, property and possession, fiefs, succession, guardianship, marriage contracts, community between spouses, donations, testaments, debts, seizures and servitudes.
