Roman 21K+ Gold Hoop Earrings | Lentoid Bosses, Matched Pair

Roman, Imperial period. A matched pair of gold hoop earrings, tested at 88.7 percent gold (about 21.3 karats). Each slender wire hoop thickens toward a hollow lentoid boss, a small domed lozenge of sheet gold that sat at the front of the ear. Fine incised collars ring the wire just behind each boss, and a twisted loop at the far end forms the closure. Simple in form and generous in metal, earrings like these were everyday jewelry for Roman women, serving both as ornament and as portable wealth.
