Roman Imperial Jasper Intaglio, Youth with Fillet

Roman, Imperial period. A miniature oval intaglio cut in orange jasper, engraved with the head and neck of a beardless youth in profile. A fillet binds the hair, and the locks are gathered in a soft roll at the nape. The lips are parted, as if the figure is caught speaking or singing. The engraver gave the face real depth for such a small surface: a straight brow and nose, a full cheek, and a neat line at the base of the neck. Gems like this were probably once set in finger rings and pressed into wax as personal seals. A wreath or ribbon on a youthful head may refer to Apollo, Dionysus, or a victor, but here the subject's identity is open to interpretation. Engraved gems were among the most personal objects of the Roman world. Engravers cut the design in reverse with drills and abrasive powders, so the true image only appears when the stone is pressed into wax or clay. That is why a gem was both an ornament and a signature. Owners chose gods, heroes, portraits, and emblems to stand for themselves on letters, contracts, and sealed containers. Heads of youths wearing a fillet were a popular choice, drawing on Hellenistic images of Apollo, Dionysus, and young athletes. Item # 205242
